On the north most of Ujung Kulon Nationa Park which across the Sunda Strait is The Krakatau volcano, thousands year ago Krakatau mountain built up a cone-shaped mountain which was destroyed to form a huge caldera over six km across and mostly beneath water level. The peaks of the rim projected as four small islands Sertung on the north-west, Lang and Rakata on the north-east (“crab” in old Javanese) on the south east. Later volcanic activity threw up two cones, Pebuatan and Danan which merged Rakata cone to form a single island – Krakatau – that extended almost completely across the caldera. When the eruption of 1883 ended. Land and Rakata half disappeared and only a stump of the original Krakatau with the caldera of Rakata remain above sea level, but also the new island of “ Anak Krakatau” the area holds a unique attraction and no visit to Indonesia can be complete without a visit to Krakatau “the volcano that shook the world”, simply 120 years ego
